The question was asked recently, after Bes had brought up that taunts in Blackburrow brought unwanted adds, why this was and what could be done about it. So, as a service to those who may not have noticed the rather marked change in social aggro mechanics with LU24, I thought I would outline exactly what happens when you pull a social mob.
First, let’s define some terms.
Hostile Action: Any spell, combat art, or attack that targets a mob that is not specifically designed to prevent aggro (the Enchanter types get an AA that does this) is considered a hostile action. Procs from damage shields, imbued pants, etc, are also considered hostile actions.
Aggro Radius: All aggro mobs have an aggro radius that if a player comes within will cause it to attack. This radius can vary greatly, with extreme examples being the gold and silver dragons in PoF which will aggro you just for being on their island and the gamblers in Maj’Dul which you literally have to run over in order to get attacked.
Proximity Pulling: Also known as Prox Pulling, Body Pulling, PP, BP, and some other less common terms; this is the practice of pulling a mob by entering its aggro radius without taking hostile action against it.
Add: An extra, unwanted mob or encounter of mobs that attack the party.
Social Mob: A Social Mob is one that will call for help when attacked, and will assist other mobs that are on its faction list as being friendly if it “hears” their call for help.
Call for Help: This is an “invisible” spell that all social mobs trigger when hostile action is taken against them. The radius of the Call for Help varies depending on the mobs, and if a mob within this radius is also social, and on a friendly faction to the mob casting Call for Help, that mob joins in the attack and becomes an “add”. A mob responding to a Call for Help does not itself issue its own Call for Help.
Now’s let’s set up an example of how all this goes together.
Let’s say you have three orcs arranged in a line in front of you, each within range of Call for Help from the mob(s) nearest them and spaced equally apart. Mobs A, B, and C…
A_____B_____C
If you shoot an arrow at the middle mob (or take any hostile action against it), it will Call for Help. This radius will touch both the other mobs, and they will copy the caller’s hate list. By doing this, they also act as though they had been pulled as well. Note, however, that they only copy the hate list order. Not actual hate values. Let’s assume you pulled with a taunt that adds 500 hate. The hate lists for each of the mobs would look like this.
A: You = 0
B: You = 500
C: You = 0
This is why adds often become aggroed to party members other than the puller. If the healer immediately casts a heal that generates 150 hate, the hate list would then look like this.
A:
Healer = 150
You = 0
B:
You = 500
Healer = 150
C:
Healer = 150
You = 0
Poor healer! So, how do you avoid this? Simple… Prox Pulling is not considered a hostile action. Therefore, you should creep within the mob’s aggro radius to get *them* to take the first action. As soon as they turn to face you, that means they are about to attack. Head back to the group with the mob giving chase, and *then* taunt it.
Be aware though, this is not always a sure way to prevent aggro. Consider this example…
A_____B_____C
Mob B is a mage type. You Prox Pull him, but he stays right there and starts to cast a spell instead. The nuke hits you, and your imbued pants return the favor with a damage shield proc. The proc hits Mob B, but he’s only barely started to move toward you after casting his spell. When the proc lands, he Calls for Help, and is still within range for mobs A and C to hear him. You now have adds even though you Prox Pulled.
Let’s take another example… let’s say these mobs are all Epic x4 and you’re the MT of a raid.
You Prox Pull mob B… and before he’s out of Call for Help range, some complete idiot casts a debuff on him, not waiting for your assist call. Counting as a hostile action, B Calls for Help, A and C answer, and your raid has to start over with 10% less armor durability.
True story… this happened to us on the MoA pickup raid *twice in a row* even after explaining why it happened the first time. Do not be this idiot.
One final point… Call for Help radius is usually larger than Aggro Radius. Keep this in mind when determining how far away is far enough when you pull.
So, all non-Tanks… remember this. If you see your tank Prox Pulling, they have zero aggro until that mob gets to the group and they have a second or two to taunt. DO NOT DO ANYTHING TO THE MOB UNTIL IT HAS BEEN IN CAMP FOR A COUPLE OF SECONDS!
I hope this has proved enlightening.
