Dr. McCoy是寇克艦長所指揮之企業號上的醫官。寇克艦長曾給他取過一個綽號叫「老骨頭」(Bones)。
McCoy曾就讀於地球的密西西比大學。2245年左右，楚爾人Emony Dax(Dax的第三任宿主)到地球擔任一個體操競賽的裁判，並與當時就讀大學的McCoy有過一段戀情。在McCoy成為醫生不久之後，他的父親罹患一種無藥可醫的致命疾病。為了不讓父親在病榻之上長期受苦，McCoy將「管子拔掉」，讓父親自然死亡。但不久之後，治療此疾病的方法及被發現，McCoy之後就背負著讓父親無謂死亡的罪惡感許\多年。2253年，McCoy發明一種神經外科手術的技術，一世紀後航海家號的EMH就使用過這種技術修補病人受損的大腦皮質。McCoy於2266年登上企業號，並在企業號上斷斷續續度過27年多采多姿的軍旅生涯。
McCoy本來在企業號的五年任務結束後即自星際艦隊退伍，但在V\'Ger危機時應寇克艦長之邀再度回到企業號。2293年，他與寇克艦長在克林貢總理Gorkon的謀殺案中被誤判有罪，但後來平反成功\。McCoy原本預定在Khitomer和平會談之後就準備要退休，但他可能改變心意，或是後來又回到星際艦隊。2364年，McCoy在137歲時以一位退役上將的身分登上D型企業號參觀。
