Ok, made some updates to this quest:First off, the view predicates on the questgiver were all kinds of messed up. If you'd made it too far in the main line he disappearaed forever. Not good. Fixed that =)I moved him slightly closer to the pond. He now appears just northeast of Giirn, if you know where that NPC is.He now only requires 6 updates (and gives you 6 traps to begin with).You can no longer update multiple traps from a single mob (you dirty, dirty cheaters!)
I wasn;t able to reproduce the situation where you can't slick the trap. They work every time for me. If anyone else experiences that issue, please let me know.
